| “The purpose of the 370 course is to introduce students to the use of technology as a teaching tool. Their experiences included the use of word processing, database, spreadsheet, network, and multimedia software. They used images acquired from digital cameras, scanners, the Internet and video cameras. They also experienced the use of other technology such as digital scales, dissecting microscopes, and scientific and graphing calculators. They explored the Internet as a resource for the classroom. Students learned the use of productivity, information, network and hypermedia software as well as digital imaging and related technology to build projects for classroom demonstration lessons. Educational technology issues (safety, liability, equity, copy write, responsibility) were also addressed. Students learned how technology can become a powerful tool in their teaching repertoire by creating and demonstrating their own lessons for the class.” |

“I put student’s work into a PowerPoint presentation. I put 2 pictures up at the same time and have the students compare and contrast them. I also used the computer and projector for a language experience activity (LEA), which made it easier to type their words, instead of writing on a board or poster. It was also more efficient at making changes to the story, and it makes their work more visible to the students. Students love seeing their work in a presentation. I think the technology added to student learning because it made it more meaningful. It took a couple of hours to make the presentation, but it was worth it because it was more meaningful to them.” |

“I was teaching in a first grade class a lesson about the seasons, so 6 weeks earlier I took digital pictures of a few trees on schoolyard. I then downloaded the pictures into a PowerPoint presentation that I used during my lesson that was being taught as the trees where changing colors. I then drew maps of the schoolyard to help the students locate the trees that I took pictures of for the presentation. The students had to find the trees and observe the differences between them and the pictures of the trees. After going back to the classroom we began to create a group story using a word processor on a computer and projector, so all the students could see. The story was about the observations the just had. The story was so cool!” |
| “The students in the professional preparation stage of preservice teaching take 2 lab courses connected to our methods blocks (The Technology Teaching Lab courses). In these courses, students are encouraged to play and explore with a variety of technologies available to teachers. Students are expected to create technology-enhanced lessons to take to the field. Students are also expected to take digital video of themselves teaching to use as a reflective component to their field experiences (through the MSaT projects). |

| I find that students who initially feel uncomfortable with technology get past their fears and, through the continued support and encouragement of our faculty, begin using technology as an extension of their lessons. Some students use technology as a teaching tool, created and used by themselves. Others get the students involved in the use of technology. When this happens, the preservice teachers see the excitement of their students when using technology in educational settings are they are more likely to use technology with the students in their subsequent field placements.” |

“Most of the things that I’ve seen our students do have certainly enhanced their instruction. These things are teacher-made materials such as visual aids. These are so important in the early childhood classrooms. Creating their our lesson materials allows our students to take ownership of the lessons because they don’t have to go looking for things that don’t match or meet their objectives. From the record-keeping standpoint, technology enables our student to be more efficient and more consistent in their recording of student progress and enables them to create student portfolios for assessment purposes. I think the biggest advantage of their technology experiences here, on campus, is that they enter the buildings as first-year teachers as technology experts.” |
| "During my student teaching, I used
a digital camera to take pictures of field trips that we took throughout
the quarter. After taking the pictures, I printed them and gave one picture
to each student. We used the pictures as a prompt, and each child held
up his picture and re-capped the events of the day. After this, each child
wrote a story about the trip. The responses from the children were better
with the visual aid reminders. The kids were really into it! They were
all fired up."
"I didn't have any experience with PowerPoint or using tables in Word documents prior to the M.Ed. program. I believe I benefited considerably from the many opportunities to experiment with different equipment and programs offered during these courses." Theresa

"During student teaching I used an interactive CD and touch screen TV about butterflies as part of a first grade reading center. My husband's company made the CD for a client and I borrowed it and the TV from his workplace. I used a scanner to create a game about patterns used on an interactive bulletin board. I had previously created the bug pattern game from foam shapes and wanted to extend the student's ability to use problem solving and logical thinking, so instead of crating another game I scanned the cards from the first game and viola, new game!" |

| "I feel that technology enhanced
my students' learning by helping to emphasize a point or concept that I
was trying to teach. My students got very excited when I mentioned that
we would use the computer during math class. Technology can also be used
as an effective classroom management tool."
"An example of using technology to enhance my teaching would be my lesson on teaching the area of a triangle using a website from the computer. It had a rectangle and a triangle side by side with a graph paper background. The students could manipulate the vertices of the rectangle and triangle to create new areas. The students enjoyed that lesson." |
"I used technology during my student
teaching experience several different ways. I used the overhead, flexcam,
and computer for word processing and internet access."

| "During the Autumn Quarter of 2001,
Mr. Neal Rinehart, an MEd student from The Ohio State University at Mansfield,
did a very good job of incorporating technology throughout the units that
he taught. He used several search engines to help him find different
web sites that applied to the units that he was teaching. He then had the
students use these web sites to discover important facts and information
that applied to what they were learning. He also had the students use interactive
web sites to learn different concepts in mathematics.
The implementation of technology was vital for the students. It gave them the opportunity to not only develop their technology skills, but to also see how invaluable these skills will be to their education. I also believe the implementation of technology allowed Mr. Rinehart to reach students who needed a different teaching format in order to comprehend new material that was being presented to them. Through his use of technology, Mr. Rinehart was able to present some very difficult and somewhat abstract concepts to the students, such as solar and lunar eclipses, in a way that was clear and concise. He could show them both solar and lunar eclipses and allow the students to view these phenomenon as they really happen. In teaching, finding materials to teach with can be time consuming and expensive. The use of technology cut down on the time and expense of teaching for Mr. Rinehart, as well as providing him with a wealth of ideas to use in the classroom." Chris Moody

“At the beginning of the year I developed a Power Point presentation for our Team for Open House for our parents -- they seemed to like it b/c it appeared that our team was techno friendly. I also have a web page that should be updated weekly -- sometimes its a little behind. My students generate a weekly newsletter from Microsoft Works Newsletter Wizard. They attend a 1 hour lab weekly where we go over how to search for information and how to use the Internet. They also do Hyperstudio presentations. We are in the process of learning how to use scanners and the digital camera. |
| Technology aids in my teaching by
being an alternative way to pass on information. The students seem to enjoy
using the computers for their research also. They seem to like this more
than books. We have to remind them that not all information on the internet
is true, there is a possiblity of it being incorrect. In some aspects it
makes my teaching easier. For example, all my grades are on the computer,
so they are averaged everytime I put in a new grade -- this is much quicker
than I could do it and more convenient with 100 students.
Technology benefits the students by preparing them for the future. Most jobs they will have they will have to have some computer and typing skills, and they are recieving that at a very young age now. Information is at their fingertips with the internet. It also gives them an alternative way to present information instead of paper and pencil. Technology allows them to be creative with their projects.” |
